Dear colleagues,
There’s something I’ve been musing about for months now and I’ve been thinking of ways to approach the topic. I’ll try and sum it up with these two questions:
- Who is reading this message?
- What would you like to read more about?
In fact, I want to hear your input about how to improve all of our communications. Member engagement is something I care deeply about and the truth is, with more than 44,000 members worldwide, I only interact directly with a small fraction of you each year.
I realize that to try and answer my opening questions, we need to go to the source.
So, I’m using this month’s message to ask you to please tell us more about you and your preferences by filling out our incentivized survey.
Survey for Resident Affiliates
Important notes:
- The survey link will remain active until October 30, 2015.
- Survey responses will be confidential and aggregated for reporting purposes.
- The survey will take on-average <10 minutes to complete.
- Members who complete the survey will be eligible to enter a draw for one of 20 prizes of a $100 donation to the registered charity of their choice (Fellow prize) or one of 10 $100 gift cards (Resident prize).
If you’ve ever grumbled about receiving yet another Royal College email, this is your chance to share your opinions (respectfully, please) and help direct our engagement efforts moving forward.
Thank you for your valuable time and consideration.
Warm wishes and kind regards,
Andrew Padmos, BA, MD, FRCPC, FACP
Chief Executive Officer

Many thanks. The key question is when will the ABMS/ABIM recognize RCPSC MOCOMP across all specialties as substantively equivalent to ABMS/ABIM? The duplication of effort by all parties is staggering. The ABMS/ABIM must surely understand that a closed book exam does not reflect current medical practice.

Thank you very much. I wrote to you last year about the desirability of MOCOMP reciprocity with ABIM MOC. I also wrote to the chairman of ABIM. I sincerely hope that this is being pursued by both parties but the silence now for many months is ominous. Can this matter be revisited since I am sure it will affect many Fellows? With appropriate political will, I am sure it can be accomplished.
I sent an email reply last week. No response yet.
Respectfully,
Ken Wilson MD FRCPE FACP FRCPC (Certification Int Med 1979, Med Onc 1985)

Dr. Wilson, thank you for your comments and diligence in following up on this topic. The Royal College already recognizes all American Board MOC Programs as substantively equivalent and are working with the American Board of Medical Specialists to simplify the process. We are taking the approach of doing this once with the ABMS rather than 24 times with each American Board. The next step in our discussions with the ABMS is a process by which assessment programs or tools developed by individual American Boards can be approved for credit within Section 3 of the Royal College’s MOC Program.
As far as we know the only American Board that has officially recognized the Royal College’s MOC Program as substantially equivalent is the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. Given that at least one of the boards (Anesthesiology) no longer requires the completion of a secure proctored knowledge exam every 10 years – in favour of a continuous assessment process; and the ABIM is considering something similar – we can foresee the day when substantive equivalency could be a reality. I recognize that this is frustrating in the interim, but we are taking steps down the path towards mutual recognition. Dr. Andrew Padmos, CEO
